RHEL 7 will default to GNOME classic mode

According to this interview,  Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 will default to classic mode in GNOME.  That makes a lot of sense considering the conservative nature of the distribution.  There are other bits of interesting info including XFS becoming the default filesystem and an official upgrade tool (probably based on fedup).   Well worth the read

  1. So much for the gnome-shell support from RH. I would have liked if they have defaulted to XFCE. Its no slouch either.

    • mether says:

Classic mode is just a bunch of GNOME Shell extensions and much if not all of the GNOME Shell development is driven by Red Hat. They seem to support it just fine. Xfce is reasonable choice for end users but the additional cost of adding yet another desktop environment to an enterprise distribution would be hard to justify. There isn’t any real customer demand for that.

It’s worth saying that XFCE will be in EPEL 7, so just a few commands away on your RHEL 7 machines.

Since f19 I prefer gnome-shell to classic. classic feels bit cluttered too.

    • mether says:

Both are GNOME Shell. Perhaps you meant the default mode vs classic mode

    • nicubunu says:

well… “classic” is newly introduced in F19, it didn’t exist in previous versions

      • mether says:

Rishi works out of Red Hat Brno and so does Florian IIRC.

      • nicubunu says:

so are you saying they were tasked by Red Hat with that since the beginning? it would make a real interesting story.

i understand *now* Red Hat is paying people to take care of Classic, since it became an important part of RHEL

      • mether says:

I wouldn’t know about that. Just pointing out that contrary to your claim, classic was put together with Red Hat developers involved. One cannot jump the conclusion that because some developers were involved, Red Hat directed it since Red Hat takes a fairly hands free approach in many occasions.

i would like to see more scientific applications added to .rpm repository, like OpenFOAM for f19. I appreciate the latex-texlive support for f18 than f17. Its a lot better.

  5. Dennis Jacobfeuerborn says:

I get why btrfs will not be the default but I’m curious why ext4 is no longer the default filesystem. Does anyone have any insights why specifically xfs is now preferred over ext4?

  6. Greg says:

Fedora to use XFS as default eventually?
